Zicam is a popular over-the-counter medication that had reported 2008 sales of $40 million on the claim that it “reduces the duration and severity of cold symptoms.” Unfortunately, the FDA said it has never seen actual proof of this claim. Zicam is marketed as a homeopathic product, and is therefore not subject to FDA approval prior to launching it for sale on the market for unwary consumers to purchase and use.
The danger with these over-the-counter products comes when they are used excessively and over long periods of time. Long-term use can cause a buildup of zinc in the body. This zinc exposure can prevent the necessary absorption of copper, which in turn can produce neurological symptoms. The product listed below contain zinc.
